What Is IELTS and Why Does It Matter in 2026?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most widely accepted English proficiency test, recognised by over 11,000 organisations across 140+ countries — including universities, employers, immigration bodies, and professional licensing boards.
In 2026, IELTS holds even greater relevance. The UK's Skilled Worker Visa now requires IELTS 5.5 in each component for all new applicants from January 2026. Australia has raised its student visa minimum to 6.0 overall. Canada's Express Entry continues to reward higher IELTS scores with more CRS points. And IELTS results for UK student visas are now valid for one year only under the updated 2026 policy. Choosing the right IELTS preparation programme is no longer optional — it is essential.
IELTS Academic vs IELTS General Training: Which One Do You Need?
There are two versions of IELTS and taking the wrong one can cost you your visa or university offer.
IELTS Academic is for students applying for undergraduate or postgraduate study and for professional registration (medicine, nursing, law, engineering). The Reading section uses complex academic texts. Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a graph, chart, table, map, or process diagram.
IELTS General Training is for immigration, skilled worker visas, and work abroad. The Reading section uses everyday materials like workplace notices and advertisements. Writing Task 1 asks you to write a formal or informal letter.
Both versions share the same Listening and Speaking tests. Writing Task 2 — the argumentative essay — is also the same for both. Gradelao offers tailored coaching for both versions. Tell us your goal during your free demo class and we will assign the right specialist tutor from day one.
IELTS Exam Format: Every Section Explained
1. Listening — 30 Minutes
The Listening test has four sections and 40 questions. Recordings include everyday conversations, social monologues, educational discussions, and academic lectures. Question types include multiple choice, form completion, note-taking, sentence completion, and matching.
The most common mistakes are missing plural forms in answers, misspelling transferred words, and losing focus between sections. At Gradelao, we run weekly audio drills using authentic-style recordings, target the specific question types where your score drops, and teach shorthand note-taking techniques for the harder sections 3 and 4.
2. Reading — 60 Minutes
The Academic Reading test has three long passages and 40 questions. The General Training version uses shorter, varied texts. Question types include True/False/Not Given, Matching Headings, Sentence Completion, Short Answer, and Multiple Choice. There is no extra transfer time — you write answers directly onto the answer sheet.
At Gradelao, we practise all 12 question types under timed conditions, teach skimming and scanning strategies that save 8–10 minutes per test, and run dedicated True/False/Not Given drills — the single most failed question type on the test.
3. Writing — 60 Minutes
Task 1 (20 minutes, 150 words minimum): Academic — describe a graph, chart, table, map, or process diagram. General Training — write a formal, semi-formal, or informal letter.
Task 2 (40 minutes, 250 words minimum): Both test types — write an argumentative essay covering agree/disagree, discuss both views, problem/solution, or advantages/disadvantages formats.
Writing is scored across four criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. At Gradelao, every Writing task receives examiner-style written feedback with band descriptor breakdowns so you understand exactly how to close the gap to your target score.
4. Speaking — 11 to 14 Minutes
The Speaking test is a live face-to-face interview with a certified examiner, divided into three parts. Part 1 covers personal questions on familiar topics (4–5 minutes). Part 2 is an individual long turn using a topic cue card (1–2 minutes). Part 3 is a two-way discussion on abstract ideas connected to the Part 2 topic.
At Gradelao, we run simulated mock speaking sessions with live tutor feedback, build your cue card preparation across the most common Part 2 topics, and coach you on pronunciation and fluency — including how to eliminate filler phrases that directly lower your score.
IELTS Band Score Scale: What Every Score Means
- Band 9 — Expert User: Full operational command of English. Appropriate, accurate, and fluent with complete understanding.
- Band 8 — Very Good User: Fully operational command with only occasional inaccuracies. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.
- Band 7.5 — Good to Very Good User: Competitive for selective universities, scholarships, and professional registrations. Top 15–20% of test takers.
- Band 7 — Good User: Required for most UK universities, nursing, teaching, and Canada Express Entry CLB 9.
- Band 6.5 — Competent User: Standard requirement for UK, Australian, and Canadian undergraduate admission.
- Band 6 — Competent User: Minimum for Canada PR, Australia skilled visa, and most US universities.
- Band 5.5 — Modest User: Accepted for some foundation programmes and pathway courses.
- Band 5 — Modest User: Below the threshold for most bachelor's degrees and immigration pathways.
Your overall band score is the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest 0.5 band. Pro tip from Gradelao tutors: Always prepare for 0.5 bands above your target. Normal test-day variation can cost you half a band — never leave yourself no margin.
IELTS Band Score Requirements by Country: 2026 Guide
United Kingdom
For a UK Student Visa at foundation level, you need 5.5 overall with 5.5 in each component. For undergraduate, 6.0 overall. For postgraduate, 6.5 overall. The UK Skilled Worker Visa now requires 5.5 in each component (new B2 requirement from January 2026). Most Russell Group universities require 6.5–7.0 overall. Oxford and Cambridge typically require 7.0–7.5 with no component below 6.5. If you are applying for a UK visa, you must take IELTS for UKVI — Gradelao prepares you for both.
Canada
For Canada Express Entry at the minimum CLB 7 threshold, you need 6.0 in each component. Reaching CLB 9 — which earns maximum CRS points — requires 7.0 or above in each component. The difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 can add 50 or more points to your CRS score. Most Canadian universities require 6.5 for undergraduate and 7.0 for postgraduate study.
Australia
Australia raised its student visa minimum to 6.0 overall in 2026. Most skilled migration categories require 6.0 overall with no band below 5.0. Nursing and teaching professions require 7.0 overall with no component below 7.0. Most Australian universities require 6.0–6.5 for undergraduate programmes.
Germany
Most English-taught university programmes in Germany require 6.0–6.5 overall. STEM and Business master's programmes typically require 6.5.
United States
Most US universities require 6.0–7.0 overall for undergraduate admission and 6.5–7.5 for graduate programmes. Top-tier and Ivy League programmes may require 7.5 or above. Note that US universities generally require IELTS Academic, not General Training.
How Long Does IELTS Preparation Take?
Your preparation timeline depends on where you are starting and where you need to be:
- Band 4.5–5.0 targeting 6.0–6.5: Allow 10–14 weeks.
- Band 5.5 targeting 6.5–7.0: 8–10 weeks is typical.
- Band 6.0 targeting 7.0–7.5: 6–8 focused weeks with tutor support is realistic.
- Band 6.5 targeting 7.5–8.0: A 4–6 week intensive programme is often sufficient.
Two to three hours of focused daily practice is optimal for most working adults and students. Gradelao builds your personalised schedule around your availability — mornings, evenings, or weekends.
Is Online IELTS Preparation as Effective as In-Person Coaching?
Yes — and in several important ways it outperforms traditional classroom coaching. With Gradelao's online one-to-one sessions, you get:
- Flexibility. Study at a time that suits your schedule, not a fixed batch timetable. Morning, evening, and weekend sessions are available across all time zones.
- Personalised attention. 100% tutor focus with no batch of 20 students where your weaknesses go unaddressed.
- Recorded sessions. Review every session at your own pace. Many Gradelao students gain an additional 0.5 band simply by re-watching Writing and Listening explanations.
- Access to specialists. Online coaching connects you with the best IELTS tutors available — not just those near your location.
- Comprehensive resources. Full access to Gradelao's digital resource bank including past paper-style exercises, audio files, vocabulary builders, and essay feedback templates.
Gradelao's Proven IELTS Tips: One Key Strategy Per Module
Listening
Always read the questions before the recording starts. You get 30–45 seconds between sections — use every second to pre-read the upcoming question set and predict the likely answer type. Students who do this consistently score half a band higher than those who do not.
Reading
Never read the full passage before you look at the questions. Skim the passage for 60–90 seconds to understand the structure, then go directly to the questions and locate answers using keywords. This single strategy saves 8–10 minutes per test — enough to check every answer twice.
Writing Task 2
Spend the first five minutes planning. A well-structured 260-word essay with a clear position, two developed body paragraphs, and a concise conclusion consistently outscores a 320-word unfocused essay. Examiners reward clarity and coherence above length.
Speaking
Use precise vocabulary and vary your grammatical structures. Avoid filler phrases — these directly reduce your Fluency and Coherence score. Prepare topic-specific vocabulary for environment, technology, health, and education. These four topics appear in approximately 80% of all Part 3 discussions.
Computer-Delivered IELTS vs Paper-Based IELTS
Both versions test the same skills, use the same marking criteria, and produce the same scores. Computer-delivered IELTS returns results in 3–5 days versus approximately 13 days for paper-based. Writing is done by typing, Listening is delivered through headphones, and Reading passages are scrollable on screen. Speaking is always face-to-face with a real examiner regardless of which format you choose.
If you need results quickly and type comfortably, choose computer-delivered. If you prefer handwriting and a traditional paper environment, the paper-based test is equally valid and equally scored.
IELTS One Skill Retake: What It Is and How It Helps
Since 2023, test-takers who narrowly miss their target in a single section can request a One Skill Retake instead of sitting the full four-hour test again. In 2026, this option is accepted by most UK universities and Canadian immigration pathways.
The retake must be completed within 60 days of your original test date. It covers one section only — Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking — and a new Test Report Form is issued with your updated score. Gradelao's focused three-week Writing intensive is specifically designed for students preparing for a One Skill Retake.

- Skilled in modern online teaching tools including Zoom and Google Meet

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the four modules of the IELTS exam?
The four modules are Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes), and Speaking (11–14 minutes). Listening, Reading, and Writing are sat on the same day. Speaking is usually on the same day or within a few days before or after.
What is the difference between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training?
IELTS Academic is for university admission and professional registration. IELTS General Training is for immigration, work visas, and some secondary education programmes. The Listening and Speaking tests are identical. Reading and Writing Task 1 differ significantly between the two versions.
Which countries accept IELTS?
IELTS is accepted by 140+ countries and over 11,000 organisations worldwide. Key destinations include the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Germany, Ireland, and the UAE.
What IELTS band score is considered good?
A Band 6.5–7.0 is considered good for most undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. For immigration, Band 6.0–7.0 is typically required. Band 7.5 and above is highly competitive and meets the requirements of the most selective universities and professional programmes worldwide.
How is IELTS scored?
Each section is scored from 0 to 9 in half-band increments. Your overall band score is the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest 0.5. There is no pass or fail — institutions and immigration authorities set their own minimum requirements.
How long does it take to prepare for IELTS?
Most students improving by one full band — for example from 5.5 to 6.5 — need 8–10 weeks of consistent study. Students targeting 7.0 or above from a Band 6.0 baseline typically need 6–8 focused weeks with tutor support.
Is there a free trial available?
Yes. All new students receive a free demo class before committing to regular sessions. The trial includes a preliminary band assessment and a personalised preparation roadmap — with no payment required.
What are the IELTS exam fees in Pakistan?
In Pakistan, the current IELTS test fee is approximately PKR 39,000–42,000. In the UK, approximately £195–£220. In Australia, around AUD 400. Check your local British Council or IDP centre for current 2026 pricing.
What is the IELTS One Skill Retake?
The One Skill Retake allows you to resit a single section of the IELTS within 60 days of your original test, instead of retaking the full exam. A new Test Report Form is issued. It is accepted by most UK universities and Canadian immigration pathways in 2026.
What age groups does Gradelao serve for IELTS?
We coach students from secondary school age upward, including teenagers, university applicants, working professionals, and adult migrants preparing for visa requirements.
